“Domestic violence is a cultural norm”

Sexual Abuse

The National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRC) reports that approximately seven women become victims of sexual assault and abuse daily in the country.

Physical Abuse

The Department of Disease Control's Injury Prevention Division recorded an annual average of 8,577 women as victims of physical abuse between 2019 and 2021. Notably, women aged 20-24 accounted for 15% of these cases, with 60% of incidents occurring in domestic settings.

In 2017, nearly 9,000 children were treated in hospitals due to abuse, predominantly from sexual abuse. These figures likely represent only the most severe cases, suggesting under-reporting.*

Trafficking

Thailand is a source, destination, and transit country for human trafficking (labour + sex trafficking of men, women, children).

From the U.S. Trafficking in Person’s 2025 country narrative: “in 2024, the Thai government reported investigating 381 trafficking cases (316 sex trafficking, 27 forced labor, 38 unspecified).*

*It's important to note that many cases of abuse and trafficking go unreported, indicating that actual incidence rates may be significantly higher.
