Family Instability

A report released by the United Nations Population Fund and the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board (UNFPA and NESDB 2016) estimated that the number of single-parent households in Thailand is over 1.37 million, and that 80% of these were single-mother. Unique challenges exist for single-parent families, especially single mothers.

As of April 2023, UNICEF estimated that approximately 120,000 children in Thailand were located in children’s homes - 48% of those children residing in Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai + Chiang Rai). Children in institutional care are at higher risk of poverty, lower educational attainment, and difficulties in forming and maintaining relationships.
